A.T. Still University’s Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health (ATSU-ASDOH) announced today that it is the recipient of a $1.7 million, five-year grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to strengthen interprofessional education among dental, medical, and physician assistant students.

The grant will support significant expansion of interprofessional education at ATSU. In which specifically, dental students will engage collaboratively in clinical settings with medical students from ATSU’s School of Osteopathic Medicine in Arizona and physician assistant students from ATSU’s Arizona School of Health Sciences.

“This funding will greatly enrich interprofessional education at ATSU,” said Jack Dillenberg, DDS, MPH, dean, ATSU-ASDOH, grant project director . “Funding will support development of clinical curricula and experiences, bringing together three health professions to fully realize Dr. Andrew Taylor Still’s vision of whole person healthcare.”

Interprofessional education has remained a main focus area at ATSU and is an essential step in preparing collaborative, practice-ready health professionals. Over the course of five years, nearly 8,500 vulnerable and underserved patients will be served by 1,950 students and faculty through the enhanced workforce training initiative supported by the HRSA grant, “Expanding Dental Workforce Training Within Collaborative, Team-Based Care Targeting Federally Qualified Health Centers and Underserved Populations.”

“The future success of healthcare delivery worldwide will be built on a foundation of team-based, collaborative care centered around patients and communities. This grant will make a significant difference in how health professions students are educated,” said ATSU President Craig M. Phelps, DO, ’84.

ATSU-ASDOH’s short-term goals include integrating a diverse group of non-dental partner agencies like the Greater Valley Area Health Education Center to facilitate both didactic and clinical team-based care. The school also plans to expand collaboration to HealthPoint – a University community health center partner campus located in the Seattle area. There, fourth-year dental students and second-, third- and fourth-year medical students will learn from and work with each other to improve the delivery of patient care.

“This grant will create potent opportunities for ATSU students to work together collaboratively in the reality of clinical practice, to learn about, from, and with each other,” said Director of Interprofessional Education and Collaboration Barbara Maxwell, PT, DPT, MSc, Cert. Attendees received updates from Randy Danielsen, PhD, PA-C, DFAAPA, dean, A.T. Still University’s Arizona School of Health Sciences (ATSU-ASHS); Eric Sauers, PhD, ATC, FNATA, chair of Interdisciplinary Health Sciences; and Tracie Rogers, PhD, director of the Human Movement program.   •      ASHS has seen tremendous growth. What started out as a school with four programs and 60 students has evolved into a nationally recognized school with 12 programs, and more than 1,340 students and 80 faculty members in just 18 years.
  •      The Human Movement program has grown quickly since its inception several years ago, now with more than 300 Human Movement alumni across the country!

They heard updates from A.T. Still University’s Arizona School of Health Sciences (ATSU-ASHS) Dean Randy Danielsen; Dr. John Parsons, AT program director and associate professor; Dr. Eric Sauers, professor and chair interdisciplinary health sciences; and ATSU-ASHS alumni chapter board members Kevin Messey, ’01, and Greg Janik, ’00.   • Numerous students, alumni, faculty, and friends of the AT program received awards at the NATA Annual Meeting. Bethany Rogers, ’07, was also presented with the Distinguished Service Award from the ATSU-ASHS alumni chapter at the event for her work with underserved adolescent athletes.
  • Michelle Weber, AT, ’14, was recognized as the 2013 Dwight Patterson Youth Sports Scholarship winner. The Dwight Patterson Youth Sports Scholarship was created in 2004 to support ATSU’s AT students who demonstrate a commitment to the well-being of youth athletes. Support the scholarship.

MESA, Ariz. – On March 1, A.T. Still University (ATSU) and community partners celebrated the grand opening of the AFA Balance & Hearing Institute, an ATSU center of excellence generously funded by the Audiology Foundation of America.

The ATSU-affiliated AFA Institute offers a full-range of audiology services through traditional and innovative patient care, while also integrating the whole-person approach into treatment.

Patients can expect to receive diagnostic and rehabilitative healthcare, access to a full line of hearing aids and assistive listening devices, as well as other specialized hearing and balance services.

Most major insurance carriers are accepted, and patients of all ages seeking hearing or balance care may qualify.

The AFA Institute is designed to be a center for teaching and learning, which means students at ATSU’s Arizona School of Health Sciences (ATSU-ASHS) seeking their Doctor of Audiology Degree are able to directly assist licensed audiologists in patient care.

“I’m most excited about being able to give our students an outstanding educational experience while also reinforcing the importance of community service,” said Troy Hale, AuD, institute director. “The AFA Institute offers ATSU-ASHS’ students hands-on clinical training, business practice experience, collaborative interdisciplinary learning, research opportunities and community interaction.”

Milner, DHSc, PA-C, as the keynote graduation speaker and honorary degree candidate for its graduation set for Saturday, March 2 at Arizona State University’s Grady Gammage Auditorium in Tempe.

Dr. Milner serves as dean and professor at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences’ School of Physician Assistant Studies.  Prior roles include Rear Admiral, Assistant United States Surgeon General and United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps officer (retired).

Dr. Milner has worked in various capacities focusing on addressing healthcare issues and is recognized as an expert on the national level in public health.

His special honors include American Academy of Physician Assistants-Presidents Award, Assistant Secretary for Health Distinguished Service Award, and U.S. Public Health Service Distinguished Service Medal.

“Dr. Milner is an admired health administrator, clinician, and health professions educator in the United States and we are proud that he will be joining us on March 2 to deliver the keynote address,” said Randy Danielsen, PhD, PA-C, DFAAPA, dean, ATSU-ASHS.  “Dr. Milner’s extensive background in serving the public health sector directly aligns with the overall mission of ASHS and ATSU.”

Nearly 160 online graduate students will come-together to celebrate the spring ATSU-ASHS graduation.  Degrees include transitional doctor of physical therapy, transitional doctor of audiology, doctor of health sciences, human movement, advanced masters of physician assistant studies, or advanced masters of occupational therapy.
